Social skills, based on the assumptions of Gresham and Elliot (1993), are a series
of behaviors in certain situations that are assessed as competent/incompetent by
others in completing social tasks, such as making friends, playing, or interacting.
This study aims to obtain an empirical description of the characteristics of
respondents who experience gadget addiction, the cooperation of students who
experience gadget addiction, the assertive actions of students who experience
gadget addiction, the responsibility of students who experience gadget addiction,
the empathy of students who experience gadget addiction, and the self-control of
students who experience gadget addiction. The method used in this study is
descriptive with a quantitative approach. The sampling technique in this study was
through stratified random sampling, obtained 73 people. Data collection techniques
used were questionnaires, interviews, and documentation studies. The validity test
of the measuring instrument used face validity. The reliability test in this study
refers to the results of the reliability test conducted by Kirembwe Rashid Abdul
Hamid (2000) in the Social-Skills Rating Scales. For Malaysian Secondary Schools
(Student Question. The reliability test was conducted using the Alpha Cronbach
method. The results of the study showed that the social skills of students who are
addicted to gadgets showed the highest scores in the three aspects of cooperation,
namely 78%, responsibility 81%, and empathy 80% related to relationships
involving others. Meanwhile, in contrast to the aspects of assertive action 75% and
self-control 78% which are more personal, these two aspects have lower scores than
the other three aspects. Based on these findings, the researcher designed a program
"Improving Students' Social Skills in Assertiveness and Self-Control Management"
which aims to improve the social skills of students who are addicted to gadgets,
especially in the ability to assertiveness and self-control management of students so
that they are able to interact positively with the social environment.
